OVERVIEW: The DM2A4ER Seehecht (Seahake Extended Range) is a heavyweight, wire-guided torpedo developed specifically for launch from surface vessels against submarines and surface targets. It incorporates fiber-optic guidance and an extended range capability exceeding 140 km.

DETAILS: The designation "DM" means "Deutsches Modell", with "A4ER" identifying it as the Extended Range version of the DM2A4 torpedo. Developed by Atlas Elektronik (Germany), the DM2A4ER was designed to provide surface combatants with stand-off torpedo engagement capability far beyond conventional ranges. It uses a modular design, high-energy battery system, and optimized propulsion to achieve extended reach while maintaining low self-noise. The guidance is maintained through a fiber-optic cable link, and the torpedo features both active and passive homing capabilities.

The ER version introduces a capsule-launch system for surface ship deployment, a range exceeding 140 km, and a fully digital interface with programmable mission profiles. Unlike the standard DM2A4, the ER variant is not submarine-launched and is optimized for deployment via vertical or angled launchers aboard surface combatants.

TYPE: Heavyweight, long-range, wire-guided torpedo

FUNCTION: The DM2A4ER is launched in an encapsulated format from a surface ship, transitions underwater, and proceeds on a guided trajectory via fiber-optic cable toward its target. It can engage both submarines and surface ships at long range using wake homing, passive, or active acoustic sensors, and is capable of mid-course updates and counter-countermeasure maneuvers.
